Mapping the Ancient Way: classical sources of modern cartography.
Wednesday, September 16, 7:00 pm New York (EDT) time, Online: the New York Map Society hosts Jonah Rosenberg, its president, at the first of what will be a series of talks on the history of maps and mapmakers: “Mapping the Ancient Way: classical sources of modern cartography.” Rosenberg says “While cartophiles may know Claudius Ptolemy, other cartographers such as Pomponius Mela and Julius Solinus have passed into obscurity. How did ancient cartography and knowledge of the world come to be known in the early modern period? We’ll survey what survived and what didn’t, and connect the dots between Greco-Roman mapping and the profusion of maps and atlases in the 16th century. SPOILER: nobody thought the earth was flat!”
